I know a lot of people will complain about us not getting Aouar but I want to at least explain why it’s not the end of the world from a squad building perspective.
Okay we all know Arteta wants a 4atb, a Partey transfer does this. By process of removing a CB for a CM that already gives us more creativity. I think people get too hung up that you need one player to create all chances. That’s outdated. Teams are creating through different avenues. From fullbacks, wingers, midfielders, strikers dropping deep, even centre backs and goalkeepers can create chances.
Secondly, Arteta has always been a “stability first” kinda guy. It’s interesting that his most costly transfers were Gabriel and Partey. Two defensive signings but most importantly, two signings that address a lack of athleticism and stability. Guys like Xhaka, Mustafi, Luiz, Holding, Cellabos and Elneny are all rated by Arteta but it’s clear as day that all the above players need hand holding. Whether it’s a lack of pace, height, strength or technical ability; they all struggle by themselves. Players like Partey, AMN, Saka, Gabriel, Tierney, Auba, Pepe and Bellerin do not need hand holding. They’re physically, technically and tactically capable (for most of the time)
Thirdly, and finally, us not signing Aouar gives more chance for one of our homegrown talents to stake a claim. ESR, Saka, Willock and Nelson. As long as none of them go out on loan, those players should taking every chance they have to showcase their talent. You never know we could unearth another Saka situation and maybe this could force Arteta to reconsider.
Look I’m upset about not signing Aouar but Partey is the first step to modernising Arsenal. Like Mane was the first for Liverpool, we may look back at this and see where it all began when Arteta became a legend for us.
