"Dein is on Holiday." - Arsène

No way Dein takes his Holiday during the January transfer window. Serious negotiations are happening and hopefully they will bear fruit.

i have seen Reyes play. Many times. The fact that I think that £20m is too much for him - considering our budget - is not down to his ability, but his personality. He is Seville born and bred, not particularly bright (I forget the nickname he has in spain but it is not complimentary) and has previously said that he did not feel capable of living outside the city. He appears to have changed his mind rather suddenly. He comes from a family that are basically gypsies, so expressing some concern as to how he is going to make the transition to living in London at the age of 18 is valid.

Consider the case of Antonio Cassano. Hugely talented teen with personal flaws (though different ones from Reyes, admittedly) from dirt poor background goes to big club as a teenager for a huge fee. He has never fulfilled his potential since, has he? And he only moved to another club within the same country, whereas Reyes would be switching from one country to a very, very different one.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't be happy if we signed him, I'm just saying that, for a £20m outlay, you really should be getting someone you KNOW will succeed.

wow you sure have done your homework on the player lol.

Some interesting info you post there, some bloody detailed infomation as well! How the hell did you find out about his background!

Lets look at Beckham. When he was young he couldn't spell footballer, he looked very uncomfortable around cameras and I better not comment on how he spoke. Wasn't exactly that rich either. Now look at him, seems to have adapted well eh ;)

Also he is 20 not 18 ;)

I've never heard him say that he wouldn't be able to leave Sevilla, infact the link I posted here he was saying he would leave. He did say he isn't sure whether

Just coz he is from a poor background doesn't mean he is like a poor person. He has probably been living a good life for 2 or 3 years now. I know loads of people who are from poor backgrounds and have gone on to be very rich, they were good people when they were poor and many of them still are now. Look at some african players, at a young age they lived in poverty and bad backgrounds, once they moved out they matured. Same goes for some of the Brazilians.

Cassano has done allright at Roma, not lived upto his £20mill price tag but that is coz he isn't even that good. Also he was known to have a big attidude problem and was very immature, I remember him saying in 2001 within 2 years he could be european player of the year  When he is bothered and tries he does well but everyone knew with him they were taking a risk coz he didn't get on well with the management.

I've never heard this to be the case with Reyes, I've heard he works quite hard and is a team player. I can understand your fears though, bloody got me thinking as well! I don't think the bid was for £20mill, it was in euros. He is so talented and I think under our club he would be protected, having a manager and a few players who can speak spanish helps a lot as well.

Yeah getting Reyes or Van Persie and Kluivert or Eto'o would make my day! I think Wiltord wont be playing for Arsenal next season and Bergy should go out on a high after this season! I thin we should keep Kanu as he's been playing really good lately..

JGooner, all things considered you can say what you like but, personally I think this is grossly unfair.

JGooner are you the genetic example of an aryan race?

What has a players character got to do with anything? I mean - what do you want done to him?

First of all, don't read the papers when they talk about anything other than a footballers footballing ability. You should never totally believe what you read anyway but definitely avoid if it has anything to do with a players personal life.

Secondly, this post makes me think this guy is going to turn out to be some kind of games bond super evil villain! JGooner you don't apply this novice analysis on everyone you meet and come across do you? Seriously mate are you really a perfect specimen in attitude, personality, nature and behaviour?

Now I don't want to get all churchy here but as they say "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" or as they say on the street "nobody's perfect". Also, it's easy for a critic because he's not open to criticising himself - although this isn't criticism but an all out assault knowing that he someone can't talk back but this insults the guys background, his personality, his humanity as a person and god knows what else.

Some people may say I'm the optimist although I'd say I'm more of a realist - but to put it simply you can't attack a persons background. It's totally unfair. You can't attack where someone comes from and you can't talk blatantly sure about someone you hardly know other than on a footballing basis. Why? Well would you like masses of people to do the same to you?

As for his brain - most managers look at players reading of the game and these days most players aren't exactly less cerebral in anyway. I am not saying it matters but I am sure most footballers are quite smart even though subjectively some people would choose to think otherwise. Whatever keeps you happy I guess.

Few players :

Patrik Vieira, Zinedine Zidane, Brazilian and South American players. Andrei Shevchenko ( i think)Most Italian and Spanish players. Many many many players from unfortunate backgrounds.

...and come on, living in London? You make it sound like it has some complexities or superiority attached to it. For most people it's just a place with a home and a house. It's not like you need some high degree of socialisation to live there.

So with that logic, living in the countryside would be easier? Not with the lack of amenities most rural places have these days mate.

cassano is a bad example jgooner. he is slowly imposing himself on the italian national team. trapattoni has already said he and totti are an integral part of the national team. he is finally living up to his transfer fee (which was ridiculosuly inflated anyway).

I see where you are coming from though 20 million in pounds or euros for a player with those traits carries a huge risk, one we maybe cannot afford to take in our financial situation. reyes is so young as well, if he was a bit older, more mature maybe the transition would be easier (i.e to a new culture).

Cultural changes also exist when a player moves from any club to an even bigger club as an academy. It's like saying the foreign countries are lesser and these guys have little or no self control and will be corrupted hell children or something bizarrely strange like that.

Many many many thousands of players enter cultural changes overseas in different countries now and the change is massive. We have had it at Arsenal as well when we have bought very young players plucking them from out of nowhere - younger than Reyes and we haven't had problems have we.

Novice character analysis aside - let's just state and hope for the best for any player. Let's hope they play at their best level. Why not avoid to indulge in crazy soap opera delusions around footballers and instead focus on wishing they'll totally blitz and revolutionise the game to entertain millions worldwide. Let's talk about prodigies actually becoming revolutionaries for the game and leave all the dramatisations inside our heads.

:D

Reggie, mate, can I just say, huh? what?:

'Let's talk about prodigies actually becoming revolutionaries for the game and leave all the dramatisations inside our heads.'

That's a crazily self-contradictory statement... but anyway.

Have just watched Van Persie play for Feyenoord, and he seems quite 'young' - coltish. Definitely a massive talent, but, like the kids on Tuesday, I think he'll need a lot of time to adapt physically to the premiership. If anyone saw bentley getting smothered off the ball by Mills and Ehiogu on Tuesday - imagine the same distinct possibility with him as well. Very elegant player though. More of a left footed Bergkamp than I thought.

Reyes, in comparison, and like Van Der Vaart is a man. Stronger, more compact.

Same age, but all grown up, basically.

Huh..? what?

It's not contradictory but quite simply put for you lewd  , it's better to talk about a young talent actually becoming a great player, who entertains the world - rather than people predicting he'll become some minion of the devil in later life.

No, what he's saying is that the first part of that sentence is probably a little bit dramatic.

Ah. ;)

Either way, our expectations of our youngsters, or potential signings should be realistic.

Yeah, otherwise i'd have been saying for years that Steven Sidwell was the new Pele.

Just as a (good) manager wouldn't spend 20 million on a player unrealistically, so a good fan would have to make their own decision as to whether that 20 million was well spent.

JGooner, reasonably, has his doubts.

Reyes could well be a 'footballing revolutionary' (although i'm not sure exactly what that is.... managers have been revolutionary, players mostly just play), but he comes with a certain baggage that is worth knowing about...

Actually, the main comparison for Reyes could well be Rooney. Tough, rough background. A hometown boy who loves his club and his city. Passionate and not the brightest.

But the Rooney comparison gives me hope - look at Rooney when he plays for England, he really steps up in terms of responsibility and maturity than he does at Everton - I think Reyes could do the same for us.

Completely agree that spending 20 million in our financial situation on one player is too risky.

Arsenal should follow its path of prudent growth. The new stadium is enough risk for us.

As much as I would like to see Reyes end up at our club...I would not feel comfortable if we´d spend 20 Million on Reyes. Reyes is not the only option we have.

As soon as we start competing with the Big Shots financially, we will lose.

Let me give my two cents worth. Basically I dun think Wenger would actually spend 20 million on a player unless he is sure this player would contribute to the team. Many could say that Wiltord was expensive but he did play a big part in our championship double and was a versatile player. And wiltord was bought at a time when inflation was high for player purchases.

I think Reyes wont be coming becos he is far too expensive. Jgooner does haf a point here since moving across the country is a big cultural change. I would like anyone to name a youngster that has moved to the premiership and take it by storm in his first season. Even Henry only managed to do it at the end of the season. Would be useful knowledge if u can tell me cos i dun really thought much about this :)

Wenger's decisions are rather hard to predict. the signing of Lehman thisyr is a surprise, Lehman wasnt even mentioned at first and he did very well for arsenal this season. The selling of Volz came as a shock as well considering he did well for fulham. Toure has been a sensational revealation and I hope Yaya would join us next time :)

Still 20 million for Reyes can be too high .. but only Wenger and Dein knows what they are doing and we'll never know .. we could end up with no players signed ... some players sold ... or someone beyond our imagination shows up in an Arsenal Jersey ... Hmm ..... keeps us guessing dun u think? :)

At least we get these sorts of entertaining guesses :)

Arsenal Quotes

Ian Wright was the incredible striker for whom those around him sometimes found hard to control especially the opponents. He was an extrovert, hyperactive, and had endured an extremely hard life. His playing style was instinctive, and he had that killer instinct, a player like no other.
