Maggie killed many things and football was one of them.

"Since Margaret Thatcher stopped teachers being paid extra money for coaching sports after school, all sporting activities have diminished on a competitive basis.

"Kids are now more obese and unfit than ever. All the prime young athletes we were ready to develop just aren't there, so we get a lesser quality of player.
Hear, hear.

first thing may be correct..as I've said I don't know this in detail...but I think influence of those policies are negated by higher number and quality of venues and stuff, better coaching etc. etc.

second part is true, but there are other reasons for that...kids have far more things to do, computers, tv...or just doing nothing and drinking, taking drugs, hanging around and stuff because its popular at the moment...you want to say this is because of Thatcher??

Look Cuban, I think no one here is stupid enough to really believe the second part of his argument but he has a point with the first one...

If my country had a leader that bad in the 1980s, it would also have had a lot of kids drinking and taking drugs.

Wait a minute... we did.

But we don't have Billy Beane saying Reagan killed baseball. Or Pat Riley saying he killed basketball... Come to think of it, like Allardyce, those guys need only look in the mirror for their sports' decline.

Don't blame Thatcher for trying it out, blame Major, Blair and now Cameron for not fixing it.

he may have a point...kind off...yes...those moves didn't have exactly positive influence on sport...but killed it? thats just ridiculous...

and as I've said...situation is same in many many countries...

Why doesn't Allardyce revolutionise the game with his high-tech sports science equipment. Muppet.

Just food for thought cuban, but think about all the countries from the iron courtain who haven't been influenced by the spread of neoliberalism until the 90ies and where the feel of socialism is still strong.

Small countries like Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia all have great success in different sports even though the general economic situation is worse and investments are lower then in Western/Cetrnal Europe...

I have to disagree...yes there is some success( certainly not great compared to Western europe) but I would say its despite the conditions for sport rather than inspite and it has nothing to do with politics...

I can speak for Slovakia and maybe Czechs...and over here..sport is on a decline...fewer and fewer kids are interested in sport and doing something, with the opportunities being ever smaller...before sport was funded and developed by state and socialistic governments...now in capitalistic enviroment this is completely different...and there is certainly no feel of socialism at all here...

It's only natural when the decline comes, I was referring more to the 90ies then now but the situation in the Balkans is a bit different, there are still great achievements in sport.

As for the socialism part I was referring to its heritage ie, free educations, health care...

He uses several million threadcount polycarbonate towels, that allow for optimal gripping for long throws.

Thought this thread was about Ben Thatcher's tackle on Pedro Mendes during his Charlton days.

:?

Ben Thatcher was with Manchester City then, while Pedro Mendes was with Portsmouth.

Sounds like Leo Durocher. Except Durocher was a little pipsqueak. And, unlike Allardyce, quite bald. And, also unlike Allardyce (as far as I know), in bed with a lot of cheap floozies AND the mob. Actually, Allardyce is looking a lot better by comparison.

Oh, wait, Durocher won 3 Pennants and was the only man between 1933 and 2010 to manage the Giants to win a World Series. Allardyce has won jack ****.

Yes, Allardyce could manage Real Madrid back to a Champions League title.

Just as Boris Johnson is the ideal successor to David Cameron as Tory leader.

You leave Boris out of this.
