To accommodate Martinez you surely need to go 433. If he can operate in that false 9 role, you should look to transition ESR into a wide left sided CM. This would open up opportunities for Willock as a right sided CM.

You can then play Pepe/Auba and Saka either side of Martinez. Tierney would give us that Robertson type role in a 433, with either another marauder signed at RB or maybe someone to tuck into the defence (considering our midfield would be quite attacking).

Leno
Emerson White Gabriel Tierney
Willock Partey ESR
Saka Martinez Pepe

Probably need to sign an additional no.8 like Aouar or Sabitzer who are available cheap.

The average age in that XI would be under 25.

He's not a signing you make unless we are open to make concessions formation wise. If we were willing to, I'd be full steam ahead on this transfer as I do think he is worth it.

I've seen no evidence Arteta is willing to do this though.

I'd skip Maddison and play Martinez in behind Auba as a second striker. Means we have to sign a midfielder that can offset some of the stuff Maddison would've brought to the side, but would love to see him zipping around doing his own thing, linking up or scoring goals and pressing a bit in defence.

Thatā€™s bad. You need experience to compete

Not been funny but we need to start planning for life without Auba.
Heā€™s only just got a new contract on Ā£300+k/W. Surely thatā€™s not an option. We need the right system and support to get him firing another golden boot season, heā€™s still got the legs.

Yeh I have no idea what we are doing. Itā€™s looking like there was no real plan going into the summer windowā€¦

And Iā€™m terms of shape/tactics Arteta has changed stance a couple times. So again it looks like he doesnā€™t really know what he wants.

People in here still scarred over Emi Martinez and what would have been a terrible signing - Jackson Martinez.

I really feel this could be the plan moving forward. Keep Willock, go balls deep for Lautaro and then sign a solid right back.

I've seen from a fairly good source that we had a budget of Ā£150M this summer NOT including sales.

Your bro? :D

I think we'll be after Ƙdegaard until the point it becomes impossible or we get him. Not seeing too many links lately but we were rumoured to be after Tyler Adams for right back who can play in midfield if we get stuck

Nah just someone on twitter that's very trustworthy and has a good source but doesn't identify as an ITK and doesn't put news out in that way.

I have wanted a 433 for a long time. Arteta keeps going back and forth though with a lot of things. I wonā€™t be surprised if he goes 4231 now because of Ƙdegaard and ESR helping us improve last season.

Mmm I think with all things considered (this is different to what I wanted at the start of the summer but things have evolved during the window) I'd also now want a 433.

It was pretty much Coutinho and Sterling wide with Suarez a bit deeper and Sturridge up top wasn't it?
The season they nearly won the league they changed to a lop-sided asymmetrical diamond about half way through the season IIRC.

Gerrard at the base, Henderson on right, Coutinho on left, Sterling as a free role number 10, with Suarez and Sturridge up front.

Yeah, I tortured myself by having a look at the 5-1 game. BBC had the line up as 433, Gerrard at the base, Coutinho left of him, Henderson right. Then up top Sterling left, Suarez centre at Sturridge right.

However I think the main thing was the movement of the front 3 meant they could all interchange & go in any position, & were being fed by quick balls from the midfield to get them isolated running at defences.

Also, watching that back, 5-1 actually flattered us. Could have been 8 again!
