See this is why all this “they’ve been planning it for twenty years” is such bollocks.
Perez has been planning it that long but if one of the most obvious obstacles is going to knock Chelsea out at the first hurdle this looks more and more like fag packet planning.
I reckon Perez, Agnelli and Laporta wanted to put the squeeze on Ceferin and bump forward the CL revamp.
They told the Yank owners about their super league idea who as soon as they realised they’d be on a level playing field with the petrodollar clubs without having to invest a penny they were all in.
There were reports yesterday they came to City and Chelsea and said “join now our you’re left behind” so they probably accepted last minute to see how it plays out.
Once PSG stayed out though they probably realised there’s no obvious benefit to joining a Super League with a salary cap when they can just outspend everyone right now as is and still compete in a CL with Bayern and PSG.
