Nah, Xhaka as 6 would be poor too. Limits his passing options and would be left isolated, where he struggles.

Alternatively Thomas as 6 you say, and Xhaka LCM, where he stays back akin to at the start of Arteta's time in the 4231, where he was taking up the LB position to build from. But don't find that particularly exciting to be honest. Rather a LCM like Aouar.

Ultimately, I don't think 433 is the way to go if we buy these players. 4231, or continue with the 343, where Aouar, other than at CM, at times could play LW, or even LWB/LM; seems to be doing most of his good work on the left.
For me the biggest downside with playing Xhaka as the holding mid in 4-3-3 is the early build up play. He is very good when he’s facing the oppositions goal and I think with Partey and Aouar/Ceballos as at cm we’d be fine defensively.

But we want to play from the back and when we do and especially if we’re under pressure Xhaka’s immobility and lack of pace makes him a big liability. 9 times out of 10 he hasn’t been able to open his body up when receiving a pass and can only play it back in the same direction, which usually limits his options to two players. This usually invites more pressure on the team as a whole.

Both Ceballos and Elneny are much better at finding passing options that let us evade pressure sooner which let us transition faster and open up the pitch.

Emery Gone, Telly Back On
I think you want him receiving the ball between the lines as much as possible. He is a specialist taking the ball on the half turn. I fear if you play him in that position, you really limit the amount of times he can get the ball in these positions.

I think he'd be used in a similar way Bernado/Foden are used at City.

As I said obviously it'd be a last resort kind of thing, just a fun idea to have as many attacking players as possible. But look at Saka in the last game, he was taking positions between the lines, which resulted in the 1st goal.

Its an interesting idea, but we also have to consider the defensive requirements of the role. Also, I'm not sure Aouar has the engine to get up and down constantly like Saka/AMN.

I think he's more suited to being left of the front 3 (where he played for Lyon in the cl), or as an attacking midfielder in a 4231.

Praying we get this done though, it would give us so many options.

I said this weeks ago and was battered for it. But this would genuinely work so well -

Leno
Bellerin - Luiz - Gabriel - Tierney - AMN
Partey - Xhaka
Pepe/Willian - Auba - Aouar
It wouldn’t really though. Too many defensive players, and there’s no good reason to move Auba from that inside-left channel.

If Aouor comes here then I’m 90% sure he will be playing centrally. If we got Partey as well then probably in a 433.

Your defensive players are Xhaka, Gabriel and Luiz. Partey adds even more stability whilst still being elite going forward.

Certainly a top tier option if both are signed but I agree that 433 is probably the way to go.

Nothing Wrong With Me
Big week ahead! At this stage I'm not interested in where Aouar plays or our formation, I'll consider that when he's ours. I still think we're going back for Partey once Aouar is done, yes we need to move some players but I'm confident that will happen. I'm also confident that if we're 20m or so short to get both the owners will make it happen.

The reason I'm confident is because we are in a unique position, a position that has been brought about by Covid. The Kroenke's are not stupid, they know this is an amazing opportunity for them to get Arsenal back into a very strong position on the field. If they let this slip by they may never get a better chance again. Normally we wouldn't get a look in with Aouar or Partey, we must grab them both while we can.

Tbh I think there’s too much focus on our defensive formation / starting position here.

Whatever formation we line up in, Arteta is going to set us up to attack in a 235 / 325 shape.

The nice thing about this signing is that - just like KDB / D. silva / B. silva / Foden at City - Aouar is capable of playing either as one of the ‘midfielders’ or as one of the ‘front 5’. I’m sure he’ll feature in both roles throughout the season depending on the opposition / how our injuries stack up.

Defo think he’s best suited to playing central as a midfielder though. Its where we need his creativity most, and we’re pretty well stocked at the inside attacking positions with Auba, Willian, Saka and Pepe. If he plays in a more attacking role I think it’s more likely to be inside right like Özil did at the start of Arteta’s time here, with Pepe or Willian hugging the touchline. Can only see him playing inside left if Auba is injured or rested.

What happens to Saka? Arteta seems all about shifting formations to create space when attacking. Teams will be wise to what we are doing soon and shut us down. I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool shut our left hand side down on Monday.

---------------------Leno
Bellerin-Luiz--Gabriel--Tierney
------------Partey---Xhaka
-Saka-------------Aouar----------Auba
----------------------Pepe

---------------Luiz---------Gabriel
---------------Partey---Xhaka
Bellerin--------------------------------Tierney
--------------------Saka----Aouar
---------------Pepe------------Auba

Without the ball Pepe can do the running for the Press. With it Aouar and Saka can come off the flanks allowing the full backs to come forward.

The box we are currently using in a 3 is maintained in the 4. Pepe, Saka, Aouar and Auba are more central and closer to goal allowing any one of them the freedom of drifting.

Pepes starting position is cf, but he won't stay there. That game where auba and Pepe played alongside each other has stuck in my mind. We need them closer together and we need them closer to goal.

Yeah, the main thing is now is IF we can complete the aouar signing, we'd have a nice variety of attacking midfielders. Aouar is a specialist between the lines. Willian and Saka both provide threats between the lines and 1v1. Pepe can provide a specialist 1v1 threat. Auba is a guaranteed 20 goals from out wide.

Aouar/Saka/Willian are all very flexible as well and can cover numerous positions, which is really promising.

Saka is 18 he wont be starting much and rightly so.
