At this point in time we can't afford to splash all our cash on a player who won't have any resale value in 2 or 3 years time. We're rebuilding and need players who can grow and increase in value. United can afford to spend 50m + signing fee + massive wages for a finished article and not worry about resale value, we can't.
It's lazy to say Varane is the better option out of the two, though. Certainly his pedigree is impressive, but we don't know his recent form nor how he transitions to a new league. Madrid hasn't been in great shape and he didn't look that good for France to be honest. With the experience he has and if he reaches his top level, obviously he's a massive signing.
In any case, I'm happy with White, despite everything I've said before. He does fill a gap in our squad with the departure of Saliba and he brings some sorely needed speed and ball-playing skills.
